WATCH: HPU breaks down the barriers and builds trust within the community

By Millie Bowman

High Point, North Carolina is a community made up of hard working people who want to grow and learn together. With that, High Point University has implemented programs and volunteer positions to help out the community and support its residents.

One program that HPU has introduced is a service learning class where students get the opportunity to take what they learn inside the classroom and apply it to real world experience.

Dr. Lynne Murray teaches several service learning classes, including children’s literature. In this class, HPU students visit the community writing center once a week and help elementary to high school-aged children with homework or other writing assignments.

Dr. Murray believes that the program is an opportunity for students to grow and gives them a much more rounded, genuine, authentic learning experience.

Another way the university is encouraging students to be active members of the community outside the gates is through volunteer work at the High Point Clinic.

Ellie Abel, a senior at HPU, has been volunteering at the High Point Clinic since February 2021.

“There are a lot of people in the city that we don’t get to interact with, so it’s cool to hear the stories of people who’ve lived in this city their whole lives,” said Abel.

Abel believes that the clinic is teaching her more about the community around her and that helping serve the citizens of High Point is one of the most special parts of the job.

“It’s good for High Point students to volunteer in some aspect to see other parts of the community and High Point does a good job of promoting volunteering,” said Abel.

Lastly, HPU has teamed up with several small businesses and restaurants in the city of High Point to accept money through students’ campus IDs. This has helped bring business to small restaurants in the city, like Shinko or Andy’s Custard.

High Point University is an active member in the community and is encouraging its students through programs and volunteer opportunities to get involved and be a part of something that goes beyond the gates.
