Every March, High Point University students select housing for the upcoming school year. HPU offers the option of living on or off campus depending on eligibility requirements.
Most students choose to reside on campus, as they say it is more convenient to travel to and from classes. They also enjoy the on-campus dormitories that HPU has to offer.
Caffey Hall, which has been open since the fall of 2017, is one of the more competitive dormitory preferences. Although Caffey houses incoming freshmen during the university’s Summer Advantage Program, it is reserved strictly for upperclassmen during the academic year.
Currently, 308 upperclassmen reside in Caffey.
Kelsey Ford, HPU junior and Caffey resident, admires the two and four-person suite layouts.
“They have multiple styles that have two rooms, four rooms and they have full-sized beds and kitchen space and normally shared bathrooms,” said Ford.
While many Caffey residents do not seem to mind sharing a bathroom, they say that a single bedroom guided their decision in selecting the dorm.
Nicki Piccione, a graduate student and Caffey resident, enjoys the single bedroom option.
“I like having my own room and my own space,” said Piccione.
In addition to the suite setup, Caffey offers various facilities that students say are beneficial. The gym on the first floor is frequently occupied throughout the day as residents appear to enjoy having it in the building.
“This, personally, is my favorite part about Caffey because I like working out,” Ford said. “And I think it’s so easy to just wake up and then walk right across the hall in my case because my room’s right across the hall.”
While the amenities have their place, the cost of living in Caffey varies depending on the tier. As of now, the 12 four-person suites are Tier 3, whereas the two-person suites are Tier 4.
Taking all aspects into consideration, the Caffey population is anticipated to grow next year as more upperclassmen select housing.
