WATCH: The work behind the Admissions Mailroom

By Millie Bowman

The High Point University Admissions Mailroom is one of the best kept secrets in the Wrenn building on campus. The mailroom provides the rest of admissions the ability to hold so many large scale events and have gifts, folders and name tags for every prospective or incoming student.

Not only does the Admissions Mailroom hold all the major sheets, campus maps, brochures, and packets you can imagine, it is also a place of community and support. Carrie Leach, the admissions outreach manager, has worked in admissions for nine years and oversees all the student workers for the Admissions Mailroom.

“It’s definitely a team effort and you are having to communicate with everyone involved,” said Leach. “You have to work with a team and luckily, I really enjoy working with everyone on my team.”

Six HPU students currently work in the mailroom and work to ensure that everything for the events are prepped and ready ahead of time to make admissions staffs’ lives easier.

One of the biggest events held at the university is the Presidential Scholars weekends. For this event, the student works in the mailroom to check in the students and give them their name tags and gifts, such as a notebook, pen, scarf and business cards.

“It is really nice to be able to put faces to the names we’ve seen for the last few months in Wrenn,” said Sarabeth Skeen, one of the student workers at the mailroom. “It makes the event feel so special.”

Leach agrees that, “When you see the students come to an event with a big smile on their face, you can know that you’ve played a role in that.”

The Admissions Mailroom is filled with hardworking people who have the same goal as the university: to be a fun, inspiring environment to new students entering the gates for the first time.

Although it’s not the flashiest job, the Admissions Mailroom is made up of people who are dedicated to the work they’re doing and believe they make a difference at every event they prepare for.
