HIGH POINT, NC – As the furniture capital of the world, downtown High Point has a furniture business on nearly every corner of the city streets. But one business stands out for doing much more than selling tables and chairs.
In June of 2017, John Muldoon opened Cohab Space as part of the furniture market in High Point, North Carolina. His products are sourced from as close as other cities in North Carolina to as far as families in foreign countries, making items like tapestries, blankets, pillows and more.
Quickly, Muldoon decided that Cohab was more than just furniture and he quickly got to work on his expansion plan. In just a few short years, even during the years of COVID-19, Muldoon made his idea a reality.
“It’s crazy how things happen, you have a plan at the very beginning…now we’re getting there because we actually have foundational partners,” Muldoon said.
One of these foundational partners includes ‘Kitchenology’, which is the newest addition to ‘Cohab Space’ opening up later this year.
‘Kitchenology’ Executive Director Jonathan Seelig has worked vigorously on this project, creating a space for not just culinary students, but also for community members to learn proper food education.
“We’re currently ranked number 14 in the nation for food insecurity and a lot of that is related to hunger and health disparities, so we’re hoping that this culinary medicine initiative through Kitchenology will help fix the issues with food insecurity in High Point,” said Seelig.
Although ‘Kitchenology’ is currently open, its move to Cohab has been an important step for the company and they look to launch in the coming months.
But ‘Kitchenology’ isn’t the only addition to Cohab’s growth plan. Muldoon says that a music stage, a fashion studio and more social spaces are in the works to expand the Cohab community.
What once was an area that was not very intriguing to High Point residents, will soon become a place for people to gather, explore and enjoy through the outlets Cohab is providing them.
Jay Kun is a resident of High Point and has lived there his entire life. He says that this expansion Cohab is implementing will have a drastic effect on the community of High Point.
“They were able to bring community members to an area of town that had been neglected for so long. It’s driven investment within this area, to where we might have the probability of new businesses and new start ups happening within this area” Kun said.
What Kun mentioned is exactly what Cohab’s goals are, when it comes to the community. All of these efforts to grow the business is to provide an exciting space for High Point residents, with a multitude of options to explore.
After the completion of ‘Kitchenology’ Cohab is looking forward to embarking on their next project to build a better space for High Point.
