A taste of home away from home

In the far left corner of a shopping center on North Main Street sits a pristine, white
building with various small plants lining the entryway. Those approaching the glass front doors
will notice a simple line-drawn logo of a large, steaming pot – one that is likely filled with
comfort food, crafted from pure love.

At the end of a long day, there is nothing quite like the feeling of a home-cooked meal. For those
who run out of time in their jam-packed schedules to cook for themselves and/or their families,
Company’s Coming is the solution.

Company’s Coming is a store that separates itself from the average grocer by specializing in
fresh, gourmet prepared foods made-to-order, as well as selling event-hosting supplies and
goodies from fellow small businesses nearby. The store’s menu boasts more than 60 food items
in a series of categories, such as hearty pasta dishes (entree), angel biscuits (side) and lemon bars
(dessert). Certain items on the menu like salads and spreads can be ordered by the pint or pound.

Clifton Smith, one of the store’s long-time owners, said it was first founded over 40 years ago by
four ambitious women looking to start a catering business – most notably, his mother.

“When mom first started this business it was all catering, and when she moved to a new location
about forty-one years ago she had a little storefront that she sold kitchen items…gourmet items
in, and so she started selling a few items that they did for the catering events as well,” said
Smith.

Smith said the previous location of his mother’s store sat near a Lowe’s hardware store, about a
mile away from its current home on North Main Street. He mentioned that it has been much
easier for customers to find the store at its new location, which has been open for three years.

As Smith’s mother’s catering business took off, interest from customers to purchase the
company’s catered foods was on the rise. Company’s Coming began making a name for itself in
the High Point area.

“That gained traction, so it was kind of just like…the products they were already doing, they
started selling to the community. Then over the years, it flip-flopped from being a catering
business to where it’s all prepared foods now, and almost zero catering now,” said Smith.

Smith’s mother has since retired from her business. Luckily, Smith and the rest of the Company’s
Coming team make an effort to put their best foot forward, keeping the store running smoothly.

In 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck the United States, people avoided leaving their
homes as much as possible. When it came to getting groceries, customers feared walking around
for their items at larger retailers – and business was booming over at Company’s Coming.

“Unfortunately, Covid was bad for a lot of people. It was really, really good for us,” said Smith.

“People were getting prepared foods. They weren’t in the big grocery store with lots of other
people.”

As a safer, more contactless alternative for customers who preferred not to publicly shop for their
items, Smith and his staff made curbside pickup available during the duration of the pandemic.

Curious customers have brought up the possibility of getting their items delivered to them from
Company’s Coming in the past, but Smith steers clear of delivery for one reason: the chance for
in-store shoppers to discover something new and exciting to bring home.

“We did curbside pickup during Covid for customers that didn’t want to come in, but we don’t
deliver. We’ll get people occasionally asking us to do it, but it’s not enough of a demand to add
that whole extra piece on,” said Smith.

“We would rather people come in the shop, because when they’re in the shop they might see
something else they didn’t know about, or try something else…if we have them in here, a lot of
times they’ll see other things and try new things, so we like them here.”
