High Point University’s Genesis Gospel Choir has dedicated the month of February to commemorating black history and excellence. The choir agrees that the song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was the best choice to deliver an enthralling performance at the Black Student Union’s “Black and Bling” Gala.

While there were other songs the group could have chosen to sing, they believe “Lift Every Voice and Sing” suitably highlights the experiences of Black Americans throughout history.

“I feel like those words of encouragement are very fitting for this time of the month and for representing black excellence and getting through things in this country as a black person,” said Alyson Longe, a first-year member of Genesis Gospel Choir.

In addition to educating about diverse aspects of the black experience, the choir also hopes their performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” inspires their generation to help manifest change. They feel that expressing the message of unity through the song is invaluable in showing how change is possible despite any obstacles.

“We, as African Americans, have went through so much, but we were able to stand strong,” said Anthony Foster, Genesis Gospel Choir Director. “And so, because of that testimonial, we can tell others in the future that you can always stand strong no matter what you go through.”

Although the Genesis Gospel Choir consists mostly of black students, white students who are also members of the club appreciate the opportunity to perform this song alongside their counterparts.

“I feel like it’s so powerful to sing this song as a group with everyone else, especially because we are an almost all-black choir,” said Bridget Mulder, a sophomore at High Point University. “I feel like it’s so powerful for other people to see that and to see us performing this song.”

Genesis Gospel Choir is confident that their song selection for the first-ever Black Student Union Gala will leave their audience feeling inspired and empowered.
